At The Goat Farm: Chic Racers

IMG_1454 Chic Racers Promo Flyer - Rev3 What has two heels and four wheels? The Chic Racers entry for the Atlanta Red Bull Soapbox Race, of course. When social entrepreneur Rosalynn Wilson asked how the zany competition might promote her company, Georgia Tech students (l-r) David Torello, Jamie Zahorian, Eliot Quon and Kemp Kernstine responded with a plan for a yoked pair of bicycles-as-pumps that just might roll over Nancy Sinatra's boots. Fueled by Red Bull, the quintet are working 'round the clock on behalf of Bottle Bar & Bistro, Chic Boutique Tour, Sage Naturalceuticals and Saving Our Communities. Come to Piedmont Park on June 9 and cheer them down the Tenth Street hill.

At The Piedmont Park Green Market

IMG_0606-001 It weighs 375 pounds, requires battery, human and propane power, contains twenty solenoids, seven forward gears, three wheels and one bellows, all to make its very own good vibrations. Cue the Jeopardy! theme. IMG_0599-001 Renaissance man Larry Barefield knows: What is Bikebeans? Ladies and gentlemen, behold the world's first and only pipe organ-coffee roaster-tricycle. Built right here in Atlanta, this gizmo provides, among other things, "the freshest coffee you'll ever sink a tooth in," promises Barefield. The man knows beans and has roasted "just about every coffee there is". His signature blend balances the bright notes of Kenyan with the somber, earthy qualities of Sumatran and just enough Columbian "to keep the two from bumping into each other." IMG_0617 Now that you're caffeinated, feel like dancing? Those twenty solenoids act upon as many organ pipes, each a masterpiece of hand crafting. Don't tell the monkey that all is orchestrated from an iPhone. IMG_0598-001 'Tis a sure bet Barefield's retirement will be an active one. The micro-roaster boasts a capacity of nine pounds per hour. Look for his traveling show Saturday mornings in the park, at food truck events or just follow your ears and nose to bikebeans.com.

People Powered Movement Photo Contest

While a subscription to Momentum Magazine is mine for the third place honor, it took a sharp-eyed Heels On Wheels rider to spot the local tweet published in the May issue. @HoundstoothRoad sang the praises of Thomas Yang's bicycle art and tantalizes those of us who wonder just what is taking shape behind the brown paper in the windows of number 316 Church Street.

The arrival of a stylish bike bike emporium in Decatur is but one of many much anticipated events this May. Ride to Café Campesino in the Auburn Avenue Curb Market Thursday morning for the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition's monthly commuter breakfast sponsored by Central Atlanta Progress.

The ABC's annual BeltLine Bicycle Tour returns Saturday at 9am, leaving from D.H. Stanton Park in Peoplestown. Ride a segment or go for the complete loop at paces either slow or fast. Please follow this link to register.

The second Friday is May 11th and time again for the ABC's Mobile Social. All are welcome and none will be left behind on these explorations of Atlanta. Riders gather in Woodruff Park at 6pm and finish at a neighborhood pub.

BikeDecatur is hosting a leisurely ten mile ride around their city on Saturday, May 12. Join them at the Decatur Farmer's Market for the 10:30am departure. Hint: arrive early for free chain lubrication and air.
