People For Bikes: The August Survey

IMG_9681 IMG_9672 IMG_9678 As part of a nationwide survey, People For Bikes has asked local cycling advocates to select prominent spots for counting ridership on third Thursdays monthly between 4:30 and 5:30. For us that would be the Tenth Street cycle track, where these folks were seen last week. The August theme was kids and we sent them some cuties. Please follow this link to see how Atlanta fared in the larger scheme.

Atlanta Cycling Festival: Act I

IMG_7716 IMG_7683 Cruising for three years on a small sailboat tests ones ingenuity and perseverance. The Bicycle Wrap Skirt from Feather and Fin is the fruit of such experience. A row of hidden snaps on the hem prevent fly-up and two removable straps keep it clear of the wheel. This elegant cycling solution is made from a comfy blend of linen and cotton, features one deep pocket and a clever envelope pouch on the waist just right for a telephone. Now fully funded by Kickstarter, the first production should be realized in August. Reserve yours here.

Pints For Parks This Tuesday

IMG_5545 IMG_7412 Sometimes called a city's lungs, parks relieve urban tensions with recreation, reflection and resplendent natural beauty. How compelling would this image of Midtown be without the tree canopy of Piedmont Park? This Tuesday, show some love for Atlanta's green spaces by attending Pints For Parks. This annual fundraiser benefits the Park Pride Volunteer Program, which annually coordinates some 17,000 hours of service among our parks. You have already seen the fruits this good work, so come to Orpheus Brewing for the party. Tickets are only $30 and get you a tour of the microbrewery, tastings and tasty bites from Craft Izakaya, Fred's Meat & Bread, H. Harper Station, Rathbun's and Yalla. The fun begins at 6 pm, but this being the week of Atlanta Cycling Festival, there will be a group ride to Orpheus leaving from Woodruff Park at 5:45. See you there!

A Sunday Ride In Piedmont Park

IMG_1450 IMG_8137 November's bout with the polar vortex is but a memory. Atlantans turned out in numbers on a balmy winter afternoon, giving me two portraits by Lake Clara Meer. Indeed, I had no more than turned from this encounter when another appeared. Such are the pressures of sartorial salutes. My usual, happy-go-lucky schedule has been preempted for December by our household move to Decatur. Exciting times, indeed, but they come with high stacks of boxes and miles of bubble wrap and tape. 'Tis an all consuming chore to organize and condense our belongings, yet the blogging will continue, albeit less frequently. Please know that I remain grateful for every pose and page view.

In The Tenth Street Cycle Track

IMG_3905 IMG_3590 Writing that headline gave me such pleasure: Tenth Street Cycle Track. Now Eastside Trail riders have a lane of their own for continuing west on Tenth Street to enter Piedmont Park or turn south in their own lane governed by a signal at Charles Allen Drive. Further connectivity planning calls for more such lanes to form a north-south loop from Fourteenth Street to Ponce de Leon Avenue via Piedmont Avenue and Juniper Street. No wonder so many call the BeltLine the best thing ever to happen in Atlanta.

At The Piedmont Park Green Market

IMG_6071 IMG_6070 IMG_6063 IMG_6068 for the Love of trees and all things that float in the breeze must have inspired both jeweler Kelly Bertelson Banks and the butterfly, which briefly alighted on a pepper this magical morning when nature and art converged in Piedmont Park. Mottled reds and golds are achieved by first super heating copper, then cooling it rapidly in water. Yes, that is a bicycle cable encircling a pendant chosen to complement the earrings. Even preserved in resin, those leaves still sway when she walks. Ms. Banks and her husband pedaled to the park, towing her jewels and his cooler full of basil pesto on a trailer that he rebuilt.

At The Goat Farm: Chic Racers

IMG_1454 Chic Racers Promo Flyer - Rev3 What has two heels and four wheels? The Chic Racers entry for the Atlanta Red Bull Soapbox Race, of course. When social entrepreneur Rosalynn Wilson asked how the zany competition might promote her company, Georgia Tech students (l-r) David Torello, Jamie Zahorian, Eliot Quon and Kemp Kernstine responded with a plan for a yoked pair of bicycles-as-pumps that just might roll over Nancy Sinatra's boots. Fueled by Red Bull, the quintet are working 'round the clock on behalf of Bottle Bar & Bistro, Chic Boutique Tour, Sage Naturalceuticals and Saving Our Communities. Come to Piedmont Park on June 9 and cheer them down the Tenth Street hill.

At The Piedmont Park Green Market

IMG_0606-001 It weighs 375 pounds, requires battery, human, and propane power, contains twenty solenoids, seven forward gears, three wheels, and one bellows, all to make its very own good vibrations. Cue the theme from Jeopardy!. IMG_0599-001 Renaissance man Larry Barefield knows: What is Bikebeans? Ladies, and gentlemen, behold the world's first, and only pipe organ-coffee roaster-tricycle. Built right here in Atlanta, this gizmo provides, among other things, "the freshest coffee you'll ever sink a tooth in," promises Barefield. The man knows beans, and has roasted "just about every coffee there is". His signature blend balances the bright notes of Kenyan with the somber, earthy qualities of Sumatran, and just enough Columbian "to keep the two from bumping into each other." IMG_0617 Now that you're caffeinated, feel like dancing? Those twenty solenoids act upon as many organ pipes, each a masterpiece of hand crafting. Don't tell the monkey that all is orchestrated from an iPhone. IMG_0598-001 'Tis a sure bet Barefield's retirement will be an active one. The micro-roaster boasts a capacity of nine pounds per hour. Look for his traveling show Saturday mornings in the park, at food truck events, or just follow your ears, and nose to bikebeans.com.

In Piedmont Park: A Bike Style Summit

IMG_0959 IMG_0965 IMG_0988 In a posting from August titled Snapshot Of A City: Monday, it was my pleasure share with you what three other Atlanta fashion bloggers had found that day. Not long thereafter, Brian Hadden and I would meet by chance at the Decatur Book Festival. No photographs resulted from that event, but today, our nerve broke in Piedmont Park. Putting ourselves through what it is that we ask of others was not only instructive; it was fun. The match was even: two guys, two three-speed bikes, two neckties and two ivy caps. See his views of me on ATL: A Thrift Life.
